How an Abu Dhabi airport transfer works at Terminal A
Every flight into Abu Dhabi now lands at one building: Terminal A at Zayed International Airport. You send us your flight number, hotel and passenger count on WhatsApp. We reply with a fixed fare for the car you pick. On the day, the driver tracks your flight and waits in the arrivals hall holding your name, then walks you to the car.
That’s the whole system, and it works the same at all six airports in our UAE airport transfer service. What changes in Abu Dhabi is the local detail, such as what Darb charges at 08:00 and why a Yas Island hotel is closer to the runway than half the city. If you are staying on after the airport run, our chauffeur service in Abu Dhabi covers hourly and day hire.
Arriving at Terminal A, step by step
Terminal A took its first commercial flight on 31 October 2023, and from 14 November 2023 every airline moved across, Etihad included. The old Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are closed. If an old booking email or blog still mentions Terminal 3, ignore it. The airport was renamed Zayed International on 9 February 2024, and the code stayed AUH.
It’s a big building, around 742,000 square metres and designed for more than 45 million passengers a year, so a far gate can mean a long walk. Immigration has biometric e-gates from the Smart Travel project with the federal ICP. Whether you can use them depends on your passport, so plan for a desk. After reclaim and customs you come out into the arrivals hall, where our side of the job starts.
For a full terminal map, departures and parking, read our Zayed International Airport guide.
Where your driver waits
Your driver stands in the Terminal A arrivals hall at the customs exit, holding a board with your name. Abu Dhabi has no published official meeting point for private chauffeurs (Dubai’s Terminal 3 does), so we send the driver’s name and mobile number on WhatsApp before you land.
The car waits in the short-stay multi-storey car park, a minute or two on foot. Kerbside drop-off zones are free but strictly timed, which is why our drivers park instead of circling. You’ll see taxis loading at the lower kerb outside arrivals and ride-hailing pickups in marked zones in the car park.
Abu Dhabi Airports also sells its own Meet and Assist concierge. Our meet and greet arrival service page explains what we handle in the hall and what is worth adding.
Timing tips: Darb hours, Sundays and event weeks
Darb’s charging hours are a fair guide to when the bridges are busiest. The four gates on the bridges onto Abu Dhabi island (Sheikh Zayed, Sheikh Khalifa, Al Maqtaa and Mussafah) charge AED 4 per crossing from 07:00 to 09:00 and 15:00 to 19:00, but not on Sundays or public holidays. Land at 08:15 on a Tuesday with a Corniche hotel and expect the slow end of our 30-45 minute range.
Two newer gates have charged AED 4 around the clock since 4 May 2026: Ghantoot on the E11 towards Dubai, and Al Qurm on Wahat Al Karama Street. Yas, Saadiyat and Khalifa City runs usually avoid all six. Our Salik and Darb toll guide has the full rules. Either way, your fare is agreed before you travel.
Event weeks matter more than the hour. ADIPEC fills ADNEC from 2 to 5 November 2026. The Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is at Yas Marina Circuit in early December (3-6 December 2026 in most published calendars), and IDEX returns to ADNEC on 21-25 January 2027. Book those arrivals well ahead and allow extra time around Yas on race weekend.
Getting from Terminal A to Yas, Saadiyat and the Corniche
The drive-time table above surprises most first-time visitors. Terminal A sits on the mainland, so Yas Island is only 7 km away: 10-20 minutes to Yas Mall, the theme parks or the Yas Plaza hotels. Khalifa City is similar. If you are here for a concert at Etihad Arena or for the Grand Prix, you are staying closer to the airport than to downtown.
Saadiyat Island, with the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the beach hotels, is about 35 km along Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street. The Corniche, Al Reem and Al Maryah Island (home to ADGM) are 33-36 km, and they are the drops most affected by rush hour. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (20 km) and ADNEC (23 km) sit in between.
The low figure in each range is a clear-road time. The high figure is what we plan for at busy hours.
Abu Dhabi airport taxi or private transfer?
Official taxis queue outside arrivals and the tariff is public. Abu Dhabi Mobility lists the airport taxi at AED 20 flagfall, day and night, then AED 1.82 per km and AED 0.50 per minute of waiting, plus a booking fee of AED 4 by day or AED 5 at night if you call one. Plenty of guides still quote AED 25. That figure is old.
If you’re one person with a carry-on going 7 km to Yas, take the taxi. A pre-booked car earns its fare when you want someone holding your name before you have found the rank, when a child seat has to be fitted before you land, when five of you have eight bags, or when the meter would run 95 km or more to Dubai or Al Ain.
Dubai, Al Ain and other intercity runs from AUH
Dubai Marina is about 95 km and Downtown Dubai 111 km from Terminal A, along the E11 through the Ghantoot gate and then Salik gates inside Dubai. The Abu Dhabi airport to Dubai transfer page covers that drive, its tolls and the timing in detail.
As of 12 October 2026, some airlines are still running reduced schedules at DXB after this year’s airspace disruption. If your Dubai flight has been cut, landing at AUH and driving across is a practical fallback. Check with your airline before you rebook. For the reverse trip, we run the Dubai airport to Abu Dhabi transfer the same way.
Al Ain is 157 km inland on the Al Ain Road, usually 90-120 minutes. The Abu Dhabi airport to Al Ain transfer page covers that road and the bus options.
Which car to book for your Abu Dhabi airport transfer
Book for the luggage first and the passengers second. One or two business travellers heading to ADGM on Al Maryah ride well in a business sedan such as the Lexus ES. If you are hosting a client or going straight into a meeting, book the Mercedes S-Class.
A family of five with a pram and four large cases for a Yas or Saadiyat resort needs a GMC Yukon Denali or a Mercedes V-Class. Don’t try a sedan. A team flying in for ADIPEC or a golf group is better off in a HiAce or Sprinter, so everyone and every bag arrives together. Children under four must ride in a child seat under UAE law, so tell us ages when you book and we will fit seats before the driver leaves for the airport.
